My Birthday and Girls’ Day

Yesterday I had a great time celebrating my birthday at work and at home with Lucas and Ke’alohi.  I was surprised with chocolate covered strawberries at work from my best friend Nalani back home and Lucas brought me a balloon and some chocolate to my office.  Aren’ t they the best? After I picked up Ke’alohi, Lucas took us to Kabuki for sushi.  I was slightly bummed when I found out that my birthday was on a Friday this year because then I knew that I couldn’t eat meat for my birthday dinner.  Luckily, I like sushi and I love Kabuki so it was a treat to go there for dinner.  We ate lots of our favorite rolls and even Ke’alohi was able to get in the action and had some rice and edamame beans.  We ended dinner with my favorite, tempura green tea ice cream.  You are going to think I’m super weird because I hate tea, all teas, grean, black, chamomile, you name it.  But ask me what my favorite ice cream is: green tea.  I have no idea why but I love it and I really love what Kabuki does to it.  They roll the scoop of ice cream in tempura batter and flash fry it for a second and serve it with some berries and chocolate syrup.  Yum!

Today was Girls’ Day and no, it is not one of my attempts at extending my birthday another day.  Girls’ Day or “hinamatsuri” is a Japanese holiday that my family celebrated  when I was younger.  Usually on that day my dad and mom would give me a little present like a doll or an outfit to celebrate.  When Lucas and I got married, he took over and would usually make me breakfast in bed or get me a little treat.  This year, Lucas took Ke’alohi and I to Benihana for some amazing food.  We love Benihana for it’s teppanyaki table, around which people gather and enjoy a meal that is prepared and cooked in front of them.   Ke’alohi enjoyed her own little chicken fried rice which is hands down one of the best things I have eaten, ever.  After Benihana, we headed home to our get our “beauty sleep” for tomorrow’s photo shoot with Janel.

Benihana reminds me of Tanaka of Tokyo back home. Remember how many birthdays were celebrated there? We all ordered garlic steak and shrimp. As a child, you loved when they made a smoking volcano out of onion rings! Hauoli la hanau, daughter! Big kisses. :)
