This was quite an eventful weekend! This is the first time that I have really talked about this on my blog but since I was pregnant, I have always been intrigued by cloth diapers. I don’t know what it was, the colors, the concept of it being so “natural” or the money saving, but I wanted to try them out. When I first mentioned it to Lucas and some of my friends and family, they thought I was crazy and that disposables were the way to go. So we started off using disposable diapers and in the beginning, they worked for us, we didn’t have a problem with them. We started off with Pampers Swaddlers and after a couple months in them, Ke’alohi started having pee and poop blowouts at least a couple times a week. Then we switched to Huggies Little Movers but they weren’t soft and felt very “artificial.” So since around Christmas, we have been using Huggies Pure and Natural. They have worked fine but since starting Ke’alohi on solid foods, she has been having more and more diaper rashes, some just a light pink and some bad ones.
Then this weekend happened and I finally took a “leap of faith.” Because this weekend was Earth Day, the Real Diaper Association put on, for the second time, The Great Cloth Diaper Change. The purpose of this event was to break the Guiness World record for cloth diaper changes at the same time by having stores and other cloth diapering moms host little cloth diaper changing parties. I heard about this event last week and it was what I needed to revisit our diapering situation. I think that this event was a sign and the motivation I needed to seek out information on cloth diapering to see if it would work for us. The best way for me to learn and get information was by meeting other moms that cloth diaper and to actually see the diapers in person. Two of my favorite bloggers, Shawna at Styleberry Blog and Chelsea at Finding Joy, cloth diaper and were a huge inspirations for me to take on this cloth diapering journey. After making Lucas watch Shawna’s youtube videos on cloth diapering with me and how to clean dirty diapers, we decided that we were going to head down to Anaheim to participate in this event and to learn more about cloth diapers.
I am so glad that we decided to go to the event and I am so thankful that the women at Rosie Posie Baby were so helpful to us. They were so nice and knowledgeable about all things cloth diaper, really making Lucas and I feel that it was doable and that this might really be a good change for our family. What I loved most about the shop and the moms that were there was that I never once felt like they were pushing or forcing the idea of cloth diapering on me. There are too many shops and people out there that all they care about is making a sale but they really helped us figure out the system of diaper that might be best for us and our situation. Lucky for us, they were having a sale that day and we were able to grab a few diapers to try out with Ke’alohi. Since using them, I have a new obsession and can’t wait to get more diapers and to visit Rosie Posie Baby with our cloth diapered baby. We will for sure being going back there for next year’s event!
To keep with the cloth diapering theme, we also got to grab lunch with one of my friends from high school, Sara. Randomly, she cloth diapered her son and is pregnant with a little girl who will also be cloth diapered. This is Ke’alohi rocking her first cloth diaper. I am so excited that this weekend will be the beginning of a new chapter for us. Bring on the cloth diapers!!!
If it helps Ke’alohi with diaper rash, then more power to you!!
