Cloth Diapering | Types of Cloth Diapers Systems

Choosing your diaper system can be an overwhelming process.  There are so many diapers out there that all have their pros and cons that its difficult to know what system will be right for you and more importantly right for your baby.  These are the four main cloth diapering systems and a little breakdown about each one of them and an example or two of each type of diapering systems.

• All in One Diaper – This type of diaper is the easiest type of diaper to use (Daddy and daycare friendly).  There is one piece to deal with which means the diaper cover, internal cotton or fleece liner and absorbent insert are all sewn together making it a simple system. • All in Two/Hybrid Diaper -This type of diaper can make for an extremely economical system because you can reuse the waterproof covers/shell and just change the absorbent inserts/soakers. Clean up is simple by just pulling out the inserts/soakers from the waterproof covers/shells.  Some of these diapers can also be used like a disposable by using separate biodegradable insert, making them travel friendly.  Example: GroVia Diaper System & Flip System by bumGenious
• Pocket Diaper – This type of diaper is made with a outer waterproof fabric that is sewn to an inner moisture-wicking fabric that keeps the baby’s skin feeling dry.  Between these two fabrics is a pocket, where an absorbent insert is placed, letting you control the absorbency without adding any bulk to the baby’s diaper.  Washing and drying time are much shorter with this system but some time is needed to stuff the diapers after the washing and drying process.  Example: Fuzzibunz One Size Elite & bumGenius 4.0 One Size
• Prefold Diaper with Diaper Cover – This type of diaper is by far the least expensive option for cloth diapering.  Prefold fabric is used typically folded in thirds and then a waterproof cover is used to over fabric to prevent any leaks.  Although this is the cheapest option it is the option that takes the longest when putting on (not great for toddlers, squirming babies or daycares) and is not as trim when on the baby.  Example: Thirsties Due Wrap Cover with Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefold
