Cloth Diapering | Traveling with Cloth Diapers

I have been waiting some time to write this because I didn’t want to write something that was “in the heat of the moment” and irrational.  I will first off say that traveling with cloth diaper is totally doable but I won’t lie and say that it is as simple as cloth diapering at home.  To be honest, it was pretty difficult for us and I don’t know if I would do it again; it would have to depend on where we went and for how long.  There are a lot of factors that go into cloth diapering on the trip that you will have to consider when thinking about bringing your “fluff” with you.

The first thing that is the most obvious is how long will you be gone and will you have access to a washer and dryer.  When we went to Hawaii, we were going to be gone a week and could use my parents washer and dryer to clean our diapers.  Something that I didn’t think about was the fact that my parents used fabric softener in their washer so I had to watch out when I washed them.  If you are going to be in a hotel, I think that your only option would be hand washing or using the disposable inserts with a AI2 or hybrid diapering system.  For us, packing them in our suitcase wasn’t too much of an issue and didn’t take up too much space.  We did however run out of Rockin’ Green detergent and disposable liners so we had to pick those up at a local cloth diapering store.

All in all, I wouldn’t rule out cloth diapering on another trip but I would be more hesitant and a lot more prepared next time.  Just remember to plan ahead all the logistics that go along with your cloth diaper system you have for your family.
