After we left the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, we headed up to the Lincoln Memorial to say hi to our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. The location of the memorial is amazing and the view of the capital and the Washington Monument is breathtaking. The statue of him siting is much bigger than I thought it was going to be and the inscriptions of both the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address were so much more powerful than I had remembered. The steps before the monument have been famous for many speeches like the “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. spoken on my dad’s birthday, August 28, 1963.
One of my favorite parts of our time there didn’t actually have to do with the memorial at all. When we were taking pictures of the statue and inscriptions, there was another child, maybe a couple months older than Ke’alohi walking around and playing with his mom. Ke’alohi is always fascinated with boys but was especially intrigued with this one as he was interested in her. All of a sudden he decides to hug her and she is kind of taken aback with him and falls over taking him down with her too. It was the cutest little thing I have ever seen. I guess boys are already starting to fall for her!
As we were leaving the Lincoln Memorial, we saw a few of Kainoa’s classmates on a tour and were able to say hi and take more pictures of the National Mall and the Reflecting Pool at the bottom of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
