The Washington Monument

You can see the Washington Monument from so many places in Washington D.C. and I think it’s second, behind the White House, in terms of the iconic Washington D.C. landmarks and “must-see” places.  The monument was built to commemorate the 1st U.S. president, General George Washington.  It is both the world’s tallest stone structure and the world’s tallest obelisk, standing at 555 feet 518 inches.  It is so much taller than I thought it would be, but just as grand as I pictured it in my head. Sadly, the monument was damaged during the August 2011 Virginia earthquake and remains closed to the public while the monument is assessed and repaired.

I was so excited to see this monument that I swear I took pictures of it from every angle and at all the other memorials and monuments that we went to!  Look, even my dad got in a picture or two for the fun of it!
