U.S. Navy Memorial

Across the street of the Archives of the United States of America is the U.S. Navy Memorial.  I was able to take a quick picture of it before we headed into the museum.  The Memorial honors those who have served or are currently serving in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines.  The Memorial was dedicated on October 13, 1987, after many years and Presidents talked about honoring the Navy’s past, present and future service men and women.  On an outdoor wall at the Memorial are engraved noteworthy sayings from the history of the U.S. Navy, and who said them.   The one that stuck out to me the most was, “Don’t give up the ship!” by Captain James Lawrence in 1813.  This quote was on the flag in the Memorial Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy and is one of the things I remembered most about our tour of the campus.
